Awasu on Linux
Awasu runs reasonably well on Linux, under Wine, and starting with v3.2, contains some work-arounds to help with this.
- First, we need to install Wine. On Fedora:
sudo dnf install wine
For other distros, check how to run your package manager, and the name of the Wine package, but it will probably be something similar.
- Now we can install Awasu:
WINEARCH=win32 wine Awasu-ProEdition-v3.2.exe
Awasu is a 32-bit program, so if you are running 64-bit Linux, we need to force Wine to set things up using a 32-bit prefix.
- Finally, to run Awasu:
wine ~/.wine/drive_c/Program\ Files/Awasu/awasu.exe
- If you want to install additional support tools (e.g. Python) that come as an MSI, they need to be run like this:
wine msiexec /i python-2.7.14.msi
Channel summary pages sometimes appear completely blank
Awasu opens a server socket on port 2604 to process API requests. For some reason, this port can sometimes remain open for a few seconds after closing Awasu, so that if you immediately restart Awasu, it won't be able to open this port. Awasu actually detects this condition and automatically switches to another available port, but for some reason, channel summary pages don't work in this case.
The work-around is to wait for the port to be released after closing Awasu before restarting it. To check if this port is in use:
netstat -an | grep 2604
Channel summary pages are slow to load
When you open a channel in Awasu on Windows, these pages are loaded progressively, so that the visible content loads quickly, and content below the fold loading later. This process doesn't work under Wine, so the entire page is generated before being shown, which can be slow if there's a lot of content.
Channels contain very large images
There has been a recent trend for publishing systems to include extremely large images in their feeds. Awasu on Windows automatically resizes these to fit the window, but this process doesn't work on Linux. Try replacing your script.js file (in C:\Program Files\Awasu\Resources\Channel Summary Templates\includes\) with [this one].
Zooming the browser window doesn't work
Manually zooming the embedded browser doesn't work under Linux, and has been disabled. You can still do this using Ctrl-Mousewheel.
Awasu Admin can't find user data files
The Awasu Administration tool (admin.exe) may be unable to locate your user's data files. In this case, you will be asked to locate them manually e.g.
~/.wine/drive_c/users/YOUR-NAME/Application Data/Awasu/ ~/.wine/drive_c/users/YOUR-NAME/Local Settings/Application Data/Awasu/
Other minor issues
- Auto-detecting if an internet connection is available may not work.
- Downloading items and images for offline reading may not work.
- Auto-discovery may not work.
- Manually marking items as read/unread in the item pane may not update those items in the browser pane.
- Colors in the item pane may not work.
- Images that are included in authenticated feeds may not show properly.
