Backups....

Post by agabenson » Tue Nov 22, 2005 3:16 pm

I know this must be a simple request... but awasu has told me to back up my channels etc before i upgrade to 2.2, but cannot see how to do this... the FAQ's and Help file don't mention backup, and having searched in this forum, can't find anything of help either. But everyone else seems to talk about it, like i should know how to do it.....

Can anyone help?

Aga.

Awasu keeps everything underneath its installation directory (by default, C:\Program Files\Awasu) so this is all you need to back up.

If size is a problem, you can exclude the Index directories (e.g. C:\Program Files\Awasu\Users\YOUR-NAME\Index) - these contain the search index files and can always be re-generated using the ArchiveMaintenance.exe tool.

You can also omit the ARCHIVE.DB and ARCHIVE2.DB files, although this means you will lose all your archived feed content.

The Logs directory can be safely excluded.

The Downloads directories can also be excluded - this is where your downloaded podcasts are stored (by default).

So i just copy and then later paste the whole of the C:\program files\awasu folder and its subfolders?? doesn't that change any of the program version settings?

That's right. Everything (well, almost everything) is stored in config files underneath the main Awasu directory. This was a design decision that lets you do things like run Awasu from a USB thumb-drive, easily have multiple installations, make backups easy :-)

The only thing that is stored elsewhere are UI-related things (e.g. the position of the main window, toolbar and keyboard customizations, etc.) which are stored in the Registry. But all your key data will be saved by simply making a copy of the the Awasu installation directory.
