Microsoft RSS feeds

Post by Brian_H10 » Mon Dec 12, 2005 5:15 pm

Hi,

I came aross this page which was suppose to give the Microsoft RSS feeds for various products but I can't seem to make any of them work.

http://support.microsoft.com/selectinde ... target=rss

Am I doing something wrong or aren't they actual RSS feeds?

Channels that I've created for other sites work well so I don't believe it's AWASU so it's either me or microsoft - I know who my money's on :D

Which ones in particular were you having problems with? I ran a few of them through the Feed Validator and they coming through OK.

Hi,

The following ones seem to be causing problems -

Outlook 2002
Windows XP Professional

In my Channel list, they appear in orange with an orange cross against them.

This means that the channels have had more than 3 update errors in a row (and have gone into "error mode" where they update less frequently until they start working again).

If you open a channel's Properties dialog and go to the Errors page, you should see an error message that explains what's happened.

Hi,

There were some errors in the log but unfortunately, AWASU has just locked up on me and I had to kill it. I have therefore lost the error messages.

It could be that the feeds are empty, but I will let you know if I get the error messages again.

Thanks,

Brian

Is this happening a lot? What version are you running?

Empty feeds shouldn't cause any problems. You can always do a manual update of the channels to force them to re-fetch.

I'm on version 2.2 (advanced)

It doesn't happen a lot - if it did, I would report it. :)

OK, I just got this error message on one of the feeds (Autoroute Europe 2005)

12dec05 20:13:35 Most Recent KBs for Autoroute Europe 2005 error: Can't update the feed.
- The request to connect and log on to an FTP server failed.

This seems to be the error that is being repeated for the others.

To be honest, I'm inclined to think that this is a problem at Microsoft's end. I've occasionally seen their feeds doing weird things and trying to connect to an FTP server definitely counts as weird.

Have these channels ever updated successfully or is it an intermittent problem? They're working fine for me... :-)

I have several of the MS feeds, all acting the same.

None of them have been updated since I created them they are all empty.

Since you have got that one working, I guess I should check my firewall logs to see that it isn't being blocked.

OK, my firewall isn't blocking the feeds.

If I right click on the channel and update now, the Awasu log reports that it was updated successfully but no items are displayed. I have checked several items on the list that I first mentioned and all are acting the same.

When you said that it works for you, do you get items displayed?

If you look at the feed XML itself (right-click on the channel in My Channels and choose <i>Show last feed</i>) and you'll see that the feed doesn't contain any items. So not showing any items is actually correct :-)

OK, at least my system is acting correctly then.

I take it that microsoft only put out new ones on the RSS feed so I'll wait for them to appear - probably won't take long :D

I may increase the time between updates to try and avoid the times when the channel name turns orange with the orange cross.

Thanks for you help

Brian
