How does Awasu determine that a news item is either NEW or Unread.
As and aside, I often us the MARK ALL READ feature, but then have 'many' items reappear as unread on the next sweep.

Ah, the age old question
Uniquely identifying feed items is a huge problem for feed readers. There is a way for publishers to assign items unique ID's but (1) not everyone does it and (2) they sometimes change
So, if a feed is updated and there is a feed item that has a new ID in it, Awasu has no way of knowing if it's really a new item or an item it's already received, just with a different ID, so it has to treat it as new. Such items are also consider to be unread since if it's new, there's no way you could've already read it!
This is a major issue with RSS and while it has been addressed in Atom, relatively few people use it.
