River Of News

Awasu now has the ability to show feed content as a river of news (i.e. multiple feed items on a single page) or only one item at a time.

River Of News is how Awasu has always worked in the past but one-item-at-a-time is common with other feed readers (that are trying to emulate email programs). I find it a much slower way of getting through my feeds but people have been asking for it, so here it is.

If you turn River Of News off, Awasu will automatically mark items as read as you move through them (pressing SPACE will do this) so you may want to try configuring your channels to only show unread content.

Opening channels at startup

Awasu can now be configured to automatically open channels when it starts up.

Choose one or more folders in the Program Options dialog and Awasu will automatically open all the channels contained in them each time it starts.

Minor changes and bug fixes

  • Fixed a crash when trying to open a browser tab using Mozilla but the ActiveX control has not been installed.
  • Fixed a problem when Control-clicking on an item in the item pane when using Mozilla as the embedded browser.
  • Switched to Outbrain's production environment.
  • Make sure the ad-blockers get activated, even if their download fails.
  • Pause balloons temporarily if they are closed/cancelled manually.
  • Ensure something remains selected in the Expired Channels dialog after channels are extended/kept/deleted.
  • Fixed a problem that was causing the unread item counts in My Channels to become incorrect after time.
  • Awasu no longers warns about having previously sync'ed using a given sync data file if that sync didn't complete successfully.
  • Fixed a minor problem with user tools sometimes getting the page URL for the {%TITLE%} parameter instead of the title.
  • Property lists now show Yes/No for boolean properties (instead of True/False).
  • Item panes that are only showing item titles (i.e. no additional columns) are now only clickable on the title text, not the entire row.
It is possible to force full-row selection to be always either on or off so if you prefer it one way or the other, post in the forums and I'll provide the necessary incantations.
  • If the Channel Wizard is started with a URL preloaded, it is no longer possible to change the channel type.
  • Auto-assigning menu item accelerators now checks the second and subsequent letters if the first one is already taken.
  • Optimized the Import From... process to run (much) faster when importing lots of channels.
  • Awasu no longer automatically creates directories in the user's My Documents folder.
  • Auto-discovery now shows the feed titles (if specified in the <link> tag)
  • Clean up temp files used when downloading feed items for offline reading.
  • Added a debug switch to configure Awasu's third-party GUI toolkit to use the system-configured font for menus.
  • Significantly reduced the number of temp files created.
  • Fixed a memory leak that was also causing temp files to be leaked.
  • Closing a browser tab now causes the previously active tab to be shown (instead of the right-most one).
  • Awasu now waits until all windows and dialogs are closed before offering to show new users the Channel Packs.
  • Fixed the auto-discovery dialog so that it correctly responds to double-clicks and key-presses in the feed list.
  • Added a way to change the colours used by the MDI browser tabs.
  • Fixed a crash if you move the mouse-wheel before the Awasu main window comes up.
This will typically happen in trial versions when trying to download a trial key but could explain some of the more bizarre crashes people have been occasionally having during startup. Thanks to Alting von Geusau and Robert Jan for reporting this.
  • Tidy up any error message shown if a feed item couldn't be downloaded for offline reading.
