Many aspects of Awasu's operation have been optimized and now run much faster. In particular, updating channels is much quicker and other key operations have also been optimized to have less impact on the UI, making it much snappier and pleasant to use.

The other major change is the addition of the new metadata modules that let you extract custom information that has been embedded in your feeds.

Many feeds contain lots of extra information embedded in them that is simply ignored by most feed readers because they don't even realize it's there! Metadata modules are included (screenshots) to recognize commonly-used extensions such as hReview and hCalendar (used to embed reviews and details about upcoming events), comments, and licensing details and you can, of course, write your own.

Item pane columns

Item pane columns can now have columns. From the Channel page in the Channel Properties dialog, click on the Item pane button and add the columns you want.

Just give them a caption and specify what values you want to be shown in each one. It can either be a simple metadata value (e.g. timestamp or digg/submitter/name) or a more complex templated string (e.g. {%ITEM-METADATA% digg/category} - {%ITEM-METADATA% digg/count}).

Global item pane columns can also be defined from the Display page of the Program Options dialog that will appear in all channel windows.

Minor changes and bug fixes

  • The watermark in the channel summary pages is now shown in the background (instead of in front of the channel content).
  • Added an option to disable error dialog boxes (especially for script errors) issued by the embedded IE browser.
This switch can be found in the top-right corner of the Display tab of the Program Options dialog.
  • The status bar now shows information about channels being updated and offline content being downloaded.
  • Revised items are no longer flagged as new.
  • Fixed a problem in Awasu's xml:base processing.
This controls how Awasu converts relative URL's to absolute.
  • Fixed the problem of channels sometimes re-appearing after having been deleted.
  • Fixed a rare problem that sometimes caused enclosures to be missed.
  • Renamed Disable item revisions to Show revised items separately in the Channel Properties dialog.
  • The Channel tab of the Program Options dialog now shows an informative message instead of a bunch of disabled content presentation controls.
  • The My Channels window now honors the Use bold fonts setting in the Fonts page of the Program Options dialog.
  • Folders in the My Channels window no longer automatically open up when a channel is dragged in.
The old behaviour can be restored by creating a DEBUG.INI file that looks like this:
  • The timestamp item metadata now recognizes the noCaption parameter.
For example, {%ITEM-METADATA% timestamp noCaption} will return the item's timestamp without the Last changed, Published or Received caption. This is useful if you want to show timestamps in an item pane column.
  • Changed the name of the default channel filter sort order from Default to Channel name.
  • Channel summary pages now show the cached channel image in the offline archive when not connected to the Internet.
  • Reduced occasional flickering in the channel summary pages.
  • Fix a display problem in the Notebook channel template if the page was scrolled horizontally (IE only).
  • Fixed a rare problem where a channel could still sometimes appear in the My Channels window even after it had been deleted.
  • Fixed a problem when generating channel summary pages when handling repeating feed- and item-level metadata.
  • The special dialog that was shown if you tried to delete a channel that lives in at least one folder can now be turned off.
Open your user's CONFIG.INI in Notepad, find the line that says DeleteChannelDlgSafeMode=1 and change the 1 to a 0.
  • Ensure that an item remains selected after deleting items from a workpad.
  • The Channel Wizard now strips feed: from URL's.
  • Worked around a possible crash when opening channel windows.
  • Added support for the awasu: protocol.
  • The sample scripts, etc. now generate RSS feeds using correctly-cased XML tags.
